Refuge Friends host poster artist reception

By Bev Arnoldy
Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge

LONG BEACH - On Wednesday evening, Sept. 26, the World Kite Museum was the venue for the reception honoring the winning artist for the 70th Anniversary of Willapa Wildlife Refuge poster contest. Pastel artist Wally Mann from Tokeland was the winning artist and featured guest at the event. Poster contest entries included a wide variety of original work in an array of mediums from Wally Mann's winning pastel, to watercolor, acrylic, photography, and even a unique mixed media 'wildlife' collage.

The reception showcased all the art entered in the competition and honored all the local and regional competing artists: Cathy Russ, Raymond; Sally Bailey, Seaside; Bette Lu Krause, Ocean Park; Dian Schroeder, Long Beach; Joan Masat, Seaside; Carly Hennigan, Puyallup; Joan Taplin, Ocean Park; Leonard Ellis, Long Beach; JD Spencer, Astoria; Jo Pomeroy-Crockett, Astoria; Marty Blount, Ocean Park and Laura Baldwin, Bonney Lake.

Wally Mann said "I am thrilled" as he personally numbered and signed 100 pre-sold of the 250 posters available for purchase. Friends of Willapa NWR members, friends, families and local artists mingled, discussing how local artists have captured the native habitat and natural beauty of our environment, which includes the Willapa Bay and Willapa National Wildlife Refuge.

"As professionals working for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, we view our surroundings as biologists and scientists and focus on describing our environment in what we call 'true science,'" commented Charlie Stenvall, project leader for Willapa Complex. "The artists who submitted artwork for the poster contest encourage all of us to view that same environment in a different and equally important artistic interpretation."

The poster was designed by Chris Goodwin, NW Visual Arts in Long Beach. One hundred twenty-five unsigned 70th Anniversary posters are still available for $15 each at NW Visual Arts (642-3299) and at Willapa Wildlife Refuge (360-484-3482).

Remaining anniversary posters will also be for sale at the 70th Anniversary Celebration of the Willapa Refuge at Refuge Headquarters on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The one day anniversary celebration will include a dedication ceremony for the new public artwork that has been recently installed on the Salmon Art Trail, a plant and bird walk at Leadbetter Point, a family hike on the Salmon Art Trail and the Cutthroat Climb Trail, a canoe and kayak trip to Long Island and the Don Bonker Ancient Cedar Grove Trail, art show and sale, kid's coloring contest, One World, One Sky kite-making, bird house making, art demonstrations, environmental and wildlife educational presentations, raffle items, food and fun. More information can be found on the Friends web site at:www.friendsofwillaparefuge.org. Willapa Refuge Headquarters is located near milepost 24 on Highway 101, (only 15 minutes from Long Beach). Parking and all events are free and open to the public so please join the FWNWR and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in the 70th Anniversary Celebration of the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge.
