| Willapa Refuge celebrates 70th anniversary this Saturday WILLAPA - As part of National Wildlife Refuge Week, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Friends of Willapa National Wildlife Refuge are sponsoring Willapa Refuge's 70th Anniversary celebration on Saturday, Oct. 13, with several events at Willapa Refuge headquarters, Long Island and Leadbetter Point. This celebration features indoor and outdoor activities, food and fun for everyone. Dress for the weather come rain or shine! This event is free and open to the public. Willapa Refuge headquarters is located near milepost 24 on Highway 101.
Scheduled events include:
Plant and Bird Hike: Begins at 9 a.m. at the north parking lot at Leadbetter Point at the tip of the Long Beach Peninsula. The hike will be approximately two to three hours. Contact Kathleen Sayce for details and R.S.V.P. at (ksayce@willapabay.org). Group size is limited.
Opening ceremony: Begins at 10 a.m. at SalmonArt Trail at Refuge headquarters. This event will celebrate new artwork added to the Salmon Art Trail. University of Washington Public Arts students who designed and built the new artwork will be on hand to describe their experience in creating their unique art piece just for the Salmon Art Trail. No reservations required.
Family Hike: Begins at 11 a.m. at head of Salmon Art Trail. Family-oriented hike will take you through the Salmon Art Trail and up into the Cutthroat Climb Trail. Hike will be approximately one hour. Contact Amy Cook for details and R.S.V.P. at (acook006@centurytel.net). Group size is limited.
Canoe/kayak trip: Begins at 11 a.m. at refuge headquarters boat dock. The paddle takes you over to one of Long Island's campgrounds. From there, you will hike Don Bonker Ancient Cedar Grove Trail. All-day (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) activities at refuge headquarters:
Wild Things: Experience a variety of hands-on activities introducing you to the wildlife and habitats of the refuge.
Children's Activities: Activities include building your own birdhouse, as well as a coloring contest for kids 3 through 17 years old and finger painting activities.
Art Demonstrations: Observe local artistsas they demonstrate their art.
Sale: Purchase 70th anniversary poster and local artwork, as well as participate in a raffle.

This is of one of the new art pieces installed at the Salmon Art Trail this fall. The collection of artwork - titled "Migration" consists of seven life-like birds native to Willapa Refuge. Each piece serves as a directional sign throughout the Salmon Art Trail and the Cutthroat Climb Trail. The artwork was designed and built by Becca Weiss, a student from the Public Arts Program at the University of Washington, Seattle.
